3 Common Problems With Locks You Need To Know How To Repair

Posted on

If you are having trouble with the door locks on your home, you want to be sure that you know of a quick way to repair it. There are some common problems that could be causing the issue. Here are three of those problems and how to resolve it:

Key is Broken in Lock:

If the key is broken in the lock, you don't necessarily need to hire a professional locksmith right away. You can try and fix the problem on your own by using a pair of pliers to try and grip onto the key and pull out. If this doesn't work, you can always remove the cylinder and push the key out. If you aren't sure how to do this on your own, then last resort is to hire a locksmith, or you can bring the entire cylinder to the locksmith directly and they can remove the key for you.

Deadbolt is Stuck:

When the deadbolt lock is stuck, this usually means that it isn't able to fit into the strike plate. First off, you need to be sure that the strike plate is secure and not loose, otherwise alignment is sure to be off. If needed, you could file down the edges of the strike plate and even the deadbolt to see if that helps the deadbolt to easily fit into the strike plate again. However, in most cases you are probably going to have to remove the strike plate and replace it with one that is better aligned with your deadbolt.

Door Lock is Slow:

If you have a hard time getting your door to unlock and have to use extra force just to get it to work, then there is a chance that your lock could be freezing. If it is cold outside, then you can use a hair dryer to warm up the lock. If the temperature is not cold outside, then another problem could be that the lock is dirty. What happens is that the dirt prevents the lock from opening quickly because the dirt is causing it to stick slightly. You should use some graphite to stick in the lock and open and close the lock a couple of times to help lubricate it. This should help remove the dirt.

If your door locks are still not working properly, it is best to call a professional locksmith who has all the proper tools and experience to resolve problems quickly. Talk to experts like Lock & Door Works for more information.
